Downtown Silver City: 1. Visitor Center / Centro de Visitantes
2012–2020
This multi-year, multi-phase project at the Visitor Center was coordinated by Diana Ingalls Leyba. The overall concept for the mural was created by WNMU student Junchen Huang.

2012. Phase I: “Mimbreño Tiles”
The mural is a door-surround that highlights the history of the Mimbres Culture. Artists Diana Ingalls Leyba and Kathryn Allen worked with students from WNMU, Cobre High School and Jose Barrios Elementary to design and assemble the mural. Glazing was done by summer mural program interns. Installation was done by artists Kathryn Allen, David Palmer, and intern Junchen Huang.
Fase I “Azulejos Mimbreno”
Este mural es una puerta que hace relucir la historia de la Cultura Mimbre. Las artistas Diana Ingalls Leyba y Kathryn Allen trabajaron junto a los estudiantes de WNMU, el Instituto Cobre y el Colegio José Barrios para diseñar y ensamble el mural. El recubrimiento fue creado por los aprendices del programa de murales de verano. La instalación fue realizada por los artistas Kathryn Allen, David Palmer y el aprendiz Junchen Huang.
2013–2014. Phase II: “Native Plants”
Artist David Palmer and 10th graders from Aldo Leopold High School added a yucca and agave plant mosaic.

2014. Phase III: Background
Diana Ingalls Leyba worked with YCC students to complete work on the background around the plants. It is bordered by Mimbres-inspired tiles with a background of sunrise and sunset.

2015–2017. Phase IV: “Apache Way”
Lead artist Diana Ingalls Leyba worked with YCC students to enhance the left side of the front door of the Visitor Center with tiles depicting the history of the Apache. Before beginning this project, YCC students listened to history told by Joe Saenz of the Chiricahua Apache Nation.
2015–2017. Fase IV “Camino Apache”
El artista Diana Ingalls Leyba trabajó junto a los estudiantes de YCC para embellecer el lado izquierdo de la puerta frontal del Centro de Visitantes con azulejos que representaran la historia de los Apaches. Antes de comenzar este proyecto, los estudiantes del YCC escucharon historias contadas por Joe Saenz sobre este pueblo originario.
2017. Phase V: Landscape
A mosaic landscape was inserted into the Apache Mural that featured local hot springs and water sources.

2018. Phase VI: “Continental Divide Trail”
With direction from lead artist Diana Ingalls Leyba, Melissa Amaris Woods’ Aldo Leopold high school art class designed this mural. They created the maps and featured NM rivers bisected by the Continental Divide Trail. Romaine Begay’s Cobre High School art students created vignette tiles that were incorporated into the mural to tell the story of life along the trail. Aldo Leopold YCC mural crew did the installation of the tiles.
2018. Fase VI “Sendero de División Continental”
Bajo la dirección del artista Diana Ingalls Leyba, la clase de arte de Melissa Amaris Wood del instituto Aldo Leopold diseñó este mural. Crearon los mapas e incorporaron los ríos de NM divididos por el Sendero de División Continental. Los estudiantes de arte de Romayne Begay del Instituto Cobre crearon azulejos de viñeta que se añadieron al mural para contar la historia de la vida a lo largo del sendero. El equipo de murales del Aldo Leopold YCC hizo la instalación de los azulejos.
2018. Phase VII: “Mimbreno Borders”
Grant County 6th graders created the tiles that wrap around the east side of the Visitor Center. These were installed by Aldo Leopold High School’s YCC Mural Crew.
